Move-Out Cleaning Checklist: What to Clean Before Handing Over the Keys

The boxes are packed and most of the rooms are empty. You are almost ready to leave. But a home that looks empty is not always clean. Grease, dust, and marks can be easy to miss when you are in a rush.

Use this move-out cleaning checklist before you hand over the keys. Start with your lease or sale plan. Some homes have special rules about what must be cleaned.

A good move-out cleaning checklist is easier to follow when you walk through the home once before you start. Note any stains, built-up grease, or problem spots. Set aside the tools you need for each room so you aren't hunting for supplies halfway through.

Start with the kitchen

The kitchen may take more time than you think. Work from the top down so dust and crumbs do not land on spots you just wiped.

  • Wipe the counters, sink, faucet, and backsplash.

  • Clean the outside of cabinets. Open drawers and remove loose crumbs.

  • Wipe the stove, cooktop, and the areas around the burners.

  • Check the fridge and oven. Clean the inside if your agreement calls for it.

  • Sweep and mop after the other work is done.

Check each bathroom

Bathrooms can look fine from the door. Look closer at the sink, toilet, shower, and floor edges.

Put bathrooms near the top of your move-out cleaning checklist if they need a lot of work. Soap film and water marks can take extra time. Clean from the highest surfaces down, then check the floor behind the toilet and around the vanity.

  • Wipe the mirror, sink, taps, and counter.

  • Clean the toilet, including the base and the floor around it.

  • Remove soap film from the shower or tub.

  • Check corners, vents, and the space behind the door.

  • Empty the bins and take all your items with you.

Clean the rooms and halls

Once the furniture is gone, you can see marks on walls and dust on baseboards. Use a cloth that is safe for the surface. Test a small spot before wiping painted walls.

  • Dust shelves, window sills, and baseboards.

  • Wipe handles, switches, and door frames.

  • Look inside closets and built-in storage.

  • Vacuum carpet and clean hard floors.

  • Remove nails or hooks only if your move-out rules ask for it.

Do one last walk-through

Open every door and cabinet. Check for trash, cleaning supplies, and items left behind. Take photos of the clean rooms if your lease calls for proof of their condition.

Look at your written move-out terms before you pay for extra work. A cleaning service may handle surfaces and floors, but hauling, repairs, paint, and appliance interiors may be separate jobs.

Before you call the move-out cleaning checklist done, turn on the lights and look at each room from the doorway. Check inside storage spaces and behind doors. That final walk-through is often when you catch the small things you missed.
